As a young student, Rod was encouraged by several people in the arts world to have his first exhibition when he was 14 where his work attracted favourable comment from Graham Sutherland and other people in the arts world. While at grammar school he was awarded an open arts scholarship, using it to study design at the London College of Printing and Graphic Arts.
Rod built a successful career as a designer founding his own creative company, the McFarlands Group, in 1972. He now lives in Spain as an artist and poet, with his own gallery and studio in the beautiful and historic town of Jávea. In lieu of fees or commission, 15% of all work sold in the gallery is donated to local charities.
Rod's creative work work has won awards across the world, with major awards in design, product launches and video. In addition, he has won gold awards in exhibitions in Amsterdam, Chicago, Frankfurt, Gateshead, Harrogate, Kuala Lumpur, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Milan, Minneapolis, Montreal, New Orleans and Nice.
Now, as an artist, he exhibits in his own gallery and in respite homes and public places where, he hopes, his work will brighten the lives of others.
Rod Davis is motivated by colour: he works in three themes - Colours of Life, Colours of Song and Colours of Earth using expressionism, impressionism and abstract styles that create an eclectic marriage of images and colour to explore cultural, environmental and challenging issues.
Colours of Life expresses the human form and explores lifestyles, relationships and attitudes. Colours of Song uses abstract and portraiture to express the emotions expressed by music, from jazz to symphonic. Colours of Earth expresses the emotion of land and seascapes, and sometimes looks at issues of the environment.
