Biography

I see myself as an illustrator of ideas. Controlled chaos, humour and surprise are all merged in my works. Often appearing playful at first, my work endeavours to visually express my understanding about existence in the 21st century and also references to the past. Modern iconography is a key influence in my work, adding colour and design to stylised variations of common place images - signs, numbers, symbols, advertisements and people. Colour has always been an important feature of my work, tying together the various elements in the image.

I am drawn to artists who push the envelope, unafraid of producing works and images that may be confronting, but always thought-provoking and endeavour to incorporate similar concepts in my own work.

Bright colours appeal to me, to the point where I find myself rejecting the sombre, dark moods so prevalent in many other forms of art. I try to reflect this love of colour in my work in an optimistic, contemporary and sometimes frivolous way, combined with order in the form of a love of the geometric. I work in acrylics, sometimes incorporating mixed media for effect, because I feel the need to be able to work quickly and get my ideas and sensations onto the canvas or board as they occur to me. I feel this results in a level of spontaneity being lent to the works which, combined with the colours I sense, make for bright, contemporary renditions of the subjects I choose.

I have enjoyed considerable success in numerous solo and group exhibitions in my home town Melbourne, Australia, and this has been a driving force in my desire to relocate and test my skills and ideas on a wider audience in the UK and Europe. I am happy to reflect on this success knowing a variety of my works are being enjoyed in private collections in places as widely scattered as Norway, France, USA, New Zealand and of course my native Australia.
