From February 7 through February 21, 2019, Ning Gallery will be hosting their first juried group exhibition of the year: The Illusion and Reality, featuring 18 artworks created by 14 U.S. based artists.
The show explores the relationship between certainty and uncertainty, existence and nonexistence, reality and unreality in painting, video, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and installation; inviting the viewer to experience how artists use their artworks to bridge the gap between the world of imaginations and facts.
Andrea LaRose’s sculpture investigates our material world and its digital copy by scanning identifiable and familiar materials, often from architectural interiors. Scanning allows the materials to become an abstract print, merging into complicated and often illusionist compositions which further disrupt the information and how we view it.
Abe Abraham creates video-art works that feature dancers from some of the world’s leading dance companies, including New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Complexions, Shen Wei, Stephen Petronio, and Dutch National Ballet. In his award-winning video work, viewers can perceive abstract shapes created by the movements of over 20 dancers under a soft blue light, who with their body contours create a series of mountainous and wavy scenes. Abraham’s work is more than just showing the powerful beauty of nature; under the breathtaking images, a deep and emotional message is gently invoked.
Michael Fadel’s installations use mechanical elements such as motors, gears, and other hardware to facilitate the interaction between an object and a fluid. In objects’ endless and repetitive movements, the traces of water are randomly generated by a rational mechanical power. This combination gives his artwork a surreal quality, but at the same time provides visual satisfaction for the viewer.
The Illusion and Reality articulates the similarity and the difference between reality and illusion in a wide variety of artistic forms, providing the viewer with the opportunity to experience how artists apply their incredible imagination to the material world, and allow us to sense the influence of their own consciousness and subconsciousness in their work.
