Biography

"Sometimes it's a struggle in my head and sometimes things become so clear. I try to draw or paint some of those clear moments."

Born 1958 in Lund, Sweden. I work with oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache and drawing.

Art has always been a big part of my identity. As a child, I felt at home in the colorful world of image and form. Here, the imagination was free and creativity flowed. I decided to become an artist when I was in my teens. It was not a difficult choice because I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember - things from life, society, imagination.

During the 1980s, I attended a private art school in Liège, Belgium, and worked as an apprentice with various artists in Belgium, the Netherlands and France for 4 years.

My painting is colorful and often very rich in content. Each picture tells a detailed story of its own that is based on an inner drive to convey something, a thought, a feeling, an opinion. It's a way of simply communicating, a form of conversation.

Over the years I have had the privilege of exhibiting in various countries except Sweden, Denmark, France, Germany, the Caribbean and the USA.

Membership: SvK, BUS, Kkv.

Having an Identifiable Painting Style
by Marion Boddy-Evans
(http://painting.about.com/b/a/246071.htm)

What is it that defines an artist’s style, that ‘thing’ which makes you recognize a painting as being by a particular artist before you’re close enough to see a signature? It can be the way the paint is handled (such as Pollock) or the brush strokes (such as Van Gogh). It can also be the way a subject is dealt with, which is what struck me about the paintings of contemporary Swedish artist Martin Johan Härd whose paintings consist of intertwined figures and events. Every painting is different, some have more in them than others, yet they echo each other in the way the subject is painted and in the choice of colors. As you look at them, you know they must be by the same artist.

I think it’s incredibly hard to describe with words what an artist’s style is, but here’s what the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle had to say when Martin´s work was exhibited: “His work comprises his universe -- a world estranged where the characters are the actors of a theatre burlesque.

Actors, or more exactly marionettes, as if they had been placed in movement by an invisible hand... perhaps that of society? On the other hand, his works display a wild play of color which accentuates the impression of the artist’s questioning of man’s place in the universe.” (Phew!)

When I asked Martin to tell me a bit about his work, he said: “I love to travel and to meet people. Each painting presents a story. Sometimes it’s about a person who’s told me something about his or her life. Sometimes I put many stories together, like a puzzle, to create a story. I also try to express things in life I like or don’t like.”

“When I’m traveling, I often keep a visual diary of drawings of people I encounter and the things they’ve told me. Drawings of the places I’ve have been visiting and situations I’ve encountered. Together this creates a base for me to work on. I don’t go to work immediately though. First I take in all the information, then I let it mature. When the painting is ready in my head, then I start to work.”

And how does he decide when a painting is finished? “I just know. I feel empty and tired when the story and colors are all together on the canvas. Then I leave it for a while and do a last check before declaring it done.”
