Juliette Vaissière, b.1995, is a French-American artist currently based in Austin, TX.
"I come from a family of scientists, and yet I struggle to remember a time when art wasn’t a big part of my life.
Growing up in southern France, I was lucky enough to be constantly immersed in art. My parents were very culturally aware and made sure to take me around to the museums, the historical monuments, concerts etc.
I fell in love with the luminosity that can be achieved in the figure with oils, and I’ve always had a unique appreciation for the Baroque/Rococo, and Medieval periods. The first because of extreme density of the compositions, the detailed intricate organic shapes, the saturated colors and coquetry. The second because of the decorative qualities: every piece is presented as an “art object”, beautiful from every side with distinctive ties to reality, and yet a very serious presence of otherworldly beasts.
I think that the magic of being a painter comes from the ability to create a believable world, and yet modify it to bring a certain understanding to the viewer.
In my recent work I am dealing with concepts of ornamentation and embellishment around the figure, exploring how humanity has a constant and driving need to change and mold the aesthetics of the world around us, whether for better or for worse. More subtle recurring themes that come into play include female sexuality, gender equality, and fairytale-inspired narratives. My figures are influenced by a romanticized, utopian, and occasionally theatrical view of historical Europe, and a sense of timeless beauty. Neither sad nor happy they are ready to be filled with whatever the viewer projects on them-offering themselves up as a “mirror”, with an apathy that borders on melancholy. I am always searching for the small thread within a painting that can start to unravel a narrative for the viewer."
Juliette received her BFA in Drawing/Painting from the University of North Texas in Spring 2018, and is currently pursuing her MFA in Painting at the New York Academy of Art. She also studied abroad at the Santa Reparata International School of Art (SRISA) in Florence, Italy, during summer of 2016.
